Psychosis and Cannabis

Cannabis use, particularly high-THC strains, has been linked to a higher risk of psychosis, especially in individuals with genetic vulnerability. Psychosis, a condition characterized by distorted reality, hallucinations, and delusions, can be triggered by various factors. Research suggests that cannabis disrupts brain chemicals like dopamine, which regulates mood and perception, potentially leading to psychotic episodes. Young people and those with a family history of mental illness are at greater risk. Frequent or heavy cannabis use increases this likelihood, although the relationship is complex, with factors like dosage, frequency, and individual predisposition all playing roles in the risk of psychosis
